“I first met Abel at Playa Cocal in Costa Rica. Along with another friend of his from Texas, we had all just gotten out of the water after a fantastic surf session and Abel had this huge grin. He had never met me before but insisted that I have dinner with him and his friends. He had come to Costa Rica from the United States, a month prior to my arrival, with a couple of friends, surf board, sketch pad and good humor.
This is Abel. He is all heart. He pursues everything he does with an irrepressible amount of dedication and enthusiasm. No matter where he goes he takes his sketch pad and a camera. His camera captures the details, his sketch pad, the impressions and feelings behind the images. Even without academic training at the time, Abel had an exceptional personal touch to his work that reached something in everyone around him. The reason is because Abel is deeply sensitive to other people. Since I’ve known him, he has always had the ability to sit down and make someone smile and laugh, to listen and talk in order to form an immediate bond.
Coming from a Mexican American family with practical values and sense of responsibility, Abel spent years working and pursuing his scholastic endeavors part time trying to find his life path. While living in Santa Barbara California he decided to pursue art, academically, full time.
Abel’s art has only brought him closer to his family and friends. After having received his Bachelors degree in Fine Art from San Diego State University, I have found that his academic training didn’t teach him to be an artist, it helped him find more mediums and methods to capture and share.
Abel sees the world not through his eyes, but through his heart. He sees the world through the experience of going to school and learning to speak English. He sees the world through his experience of struggling financially, but having a richness of friends. He sees the world through the hearts of hundreds of people that he has met from different countries and cultures. Most importantly, Abel sees the world through his family and friends. With their loving support and encouragement, his hard work and dedication has been able to attain him an international clientele and continues to reach the hearts of others worldwide.
I will not attempt to analyze or speak to the methods that Abel uses to capture his art for us by placing it on wood, canvas or paper. I will not attempt to explain the reasons that Abel combines the images that he does. Abel is an exceptional person; he has an eye for the technical. His art is an evocative statement of his experience; a reflection of his heart. Abel’s work is culturally definitive, from the boundaries of language and generations, to the intimacy between individuals.” – Damian Bushong
