Haha! These are awesome questions. Probably "neat"!

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

From Vanity Fair: "The Proust Questionnaire has its origins in a parlor game popularized (though not devised) by Marcel Proust, the French essayist and novelist, who believed that, in answering these questions, an individual reveals his or her true nature." We've taken the original Proust Questionnaire and modified it a bit for our artists and makers so that they can share more about themselves with all of you. Check out the series to see how they all answered.

My Favorite Piece with Sweet Thyme Design

Today’s “My Favorite Piece” comes from NEW Heartmade maker Chelsea Bumgarner of Sweet Thyme Design! Chelsea (The Spoon Lady of Austin!) will be driving down from our state capital to share her “hand stamped vintage flatware and living greeting cards” with Houston. (Yes, living! The cards have wildflower seeds and can be planted!) We met Chelsea at the incredible Cherrywood Art Fair run by our friends Chula League, and we couldn’t leave without enticing her to visit Houston for Heartmade. We know you’ll give her a warm Houston welcome and don’t forget — Mother’s Day is the weekend after our market and we think Sweet Thyme Design is just what Mama ordered!

Spoon Lady Collection

My Spoon Lady Collection is inspired by my favorite kind of stories — ya know, the ones where women save themselves, and encourage females to stand with other females in support, not in competition. Stories where being Pro-Women doesn’t mean being Anti-Men, but rather recognizing each other’s strength and redefining the word “beautiful” by empowering one another, in likeness and difference. Stories where women are so fierce that everyone else wishes they were born a woman too. I created this line of spoons during a time where I felt like I was in a rut, creatively. When this idea hit, it was like a breath of fresh air. Each Lady is different, to prove that being a strong & independent woman doesn’t look the same on everyone, and to focus on the importance of lifting each other up.

I create the face of each Spoon Lady by combining individual character stamps to form a face-like shape, hammering each one by hand.

The Nature Of: Clayton Harkey of Twisted Arrow Goods

Our very first “Nature Of” of 2019 is from one of our favorite Heartmade makers, Clayton Harkey, who along with his friend and business partner Shane Spangler, owns Twisted Arrow Goods, selling a fantastic mix of handcrafted wood pieces, leatherwork, soap, candles, blankets, you name it! These guys represent honesty and integrity to us and we love having them at every show because they always bring new and beautiful work as well as their hilarious kind selves. You will NOT want to miss visiting them on May 4th. We love our boys! Now let’s check out what makes Clay tick…

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Perfect happiness to me is living out the purpose God has put in your life. It's not always rainbows and ponies, but yet you are content with what is happening in the here and now.

Which living person do you most admire?

This is a really hard question because there are so many people in this world to admire! I would say that they all carry the same traits though -- hard-working, thoughtful, kind, and willing to go the extra mile for anyone at any time.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Tools. We can never have enough tools, and the right ones for the right job.

What is your current state of mind?

Currently...tired. But ready for what must be accomplished tonight and what needs to be accomplished tomorrow. Living each day one at a time helps in lessening the stress and anxiety levels.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

"Excellence". Like what does that even mean? And whose definition? You see it in so many companies mission statements and virtues, but how do you know, you know? It's puzzling, really.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?

Nothing. Pretty content on how things are going.

What is the quality you most like in a man?

Strong and ambitious and totally dreamy.....I don't know haha

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Driven. Not only is it attractive, but I believe people are more than willing to rally behind any woman that shows the characteristics of being driven.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

"bruh", "dude", "heck of a deal", "alright".

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

Would it be rude to say food? (Editor’s note: We accept this answer. 🤤😂)

When and where were you happiest?

On the top of Mt. Phillips in New Mexico. So peaceful.

Which talent would you most like to have?

I'm gonna have to go with juggling. Can't do it to save my life, but people who can make it look so darn easy. Curse them.

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?

Maybe to be a bit more carefree. Sometimes I find myself worrying about the smallest, dumbest things. I'm working on it.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

I would have to say quitting my corporate job and going full time into TAG. I wouldn't want to do anything else now!

If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing what would it be?

I don't really believe in reincarnation, but I'll bite. Probably a cute cuddly dog. My gosh the things I would do to be a dog sometimes. Their lives rule.

Where would you most like to live?

My dream place to live would be Vancouver, Washington. But not for reasons most people would believe. I think it is the best place to live because Washington has no state income tax and Portland is right across the bridge in which there is no sales tax. In my opinion, heaven on earth to be able to keep the hard-earned money I make. and the scenery is nice too.

What is your most treasured possession?

One of my best friends built me a custom guitar...well two, actually. They are probably my favorite things in the world.

What is your most marked characteristic?

I honestly have no idea. My parents would probably argue that it's that I have never met a stranger. Pretty open to talk to anyone.

What do you most value in your friends?

Honesty, Punctuality, and Perseverance.

Who are your favorite artists?

There are wayyyy too many to name. But I really like the leather goods company Stock and Barrel from Utah. Franz Keilhofer from Bavaria has been quite inspiring in the woodcraft he does, as well as Scott Alexander who makes wooden bowls like you wouldn't believe.

Which local artists or makers most inspire you?

I am truly inspired by quite a few makers! Statesman Beverage Co., Bear Cub Leather Goods, MC Shave Gear are just a few, but honestly, any artist or maker that works their tails off day in and day out is inspiring in my book.

Which historical figure do you most identify with?

Rosa Parks. She didn't take no crap off of anybody and did what she felt was right.

Who are your heroes in real life?

Tim Bird, a good friend of mine, my youth pastor growing, and a fellow musician in worship music. Lance Gatch and Mack Brock who led Elevation Church's worship to new heights (no pun intended) and so many more.

What are your favorite names?

Stetson. Leeland. Abigail. Quinton. June.

What is your motto?

Do what you say, and do it well.

From Vanity Fair: "The Proust Questionnaire has its origins in a parlor game popularized (though not devised) by Marcel Proust, the French essayist and novelist, who believed that, in answering these questions, an individual reveals his or her true nature." Confidence

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

OOF!!!

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

My husband of 15 years: who annoys me when he’s hungry but always puts me first and makes sure that I’m happy.

When and where were you happiest?

I think right now; at this point in life. I took about 10 years off from painting to take care of life. I still created, but always felt something missing. I’m happy that I’m now doing what I love. I’m healthy, able to provide for my family, and paint anything I want to paint. Sharing my art makes me happy.

Which talent would you most like to have?

Being able to draw like Kim Jung Gi

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?

My indecisiveness; sometimes I take forever to decide on something.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

My 2 kids; they make me so proud (most days). LOL! But it’s amazing to see them put what you taught them to use.

If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing what would it be?

A rainbow.

Where would you most like to live?

In the wild.

What is your most treasured possession?

Family.

What is your most marked characteristic?

What do you most value in your friends?

Honesty.

Who are your favorite artists?

James Jean, Yuko Shimizu, and Victo Ngai. Their illustrations always tell a story and many powerful ones at that.

Which historical figure do you most identify with?

Frida Kahlo. What I admire most about her is how she paints with emotion and translates them onto the canvas. She was able to share how she felt with the world. My mind feels so overwhelmed until I put it out there into a drawing or a painting; even if it doesn’t make sense to anyone else.

Who are your heroes in real life?

My parents who gave up everything they knew to give our family a chance at a better future.

What are your favorite names?

Squishy

What is your motto?

You’re enough.

From Vanity Fair: "The Proust Questionnaire has its origins in a parlor game popularized (though not devised) by Marcel Proust, the French essayist and novelist, who believed that, in answering these questions, an individual reveals his or her true nature." Three Questions With Porchworks Houston

We’re very proud to introduce new Heartmade vendors August and Maddie Kimmel of Porchworks Houston! This is their very first market!! They have chosen to answer our three questions so that you can learn all about their business and get inspired by their sense of entrepreneurship. August and Maddie are our youngest vendors but they are also non-stop busy and they donate a lot of their profits to charity! We can’t wait to see their booth on Main this Saturday and we hope you’ll visit them and encourage young vendors to keep reaching for the next level!

My Favorite Piece with Studio E Houston

We’re thrilled to welcome Erica Sandberg of Studio E Houston to Heartmade this Saturday! Her dreamy paintings drew us right in and we know they will find a lot of good homes with our fantastic customers. Visit Erica on Main this Saturday from 10-5 at Heartmade Harvest!

My favorite piece that I have created recently is called “Mauvescape #1.” I had some idea of what I wanted to try to accomplish with these colors and luckily it worked! This piece is an alcohol ink painting on yupo paper. Alcohol ink dries very quickly so I had very little time to manipulate the colors to create a mountainous type landscape. After the painting was completed and dried, I mounted the yupo paper on 8” x 10” cradled birch panel. I love that this piece has so many layers and so much depth. I usually use more brilliant colors, but I really love the more muted color palette. I look forward to showing everyone more of my work in my first Heartmade market!

My Favorite Piece with fuzzy grapefruit

We’re so happy to be welcoming back Heartmade artist Allison Johnston of fuzzy grapefruit! Her work often features animals in hilarious situations, like dogs dressed as famous people. (Tracy: “I own a Doggy Parton print!”) We were really proud of Allison’s most recent show featuring incredible paintings of endangered animals on entirely recycled materials. It was incredible and we’re crossing our fingers for prints at Heartmade Harvest, a week from tomorrow on November 3rd! Today’s post is about her favorite piece, which comes from that very show!

"Sacred Animal: Bornean Orangutan"

16" x 19.5”

acrylic & gouache on cotton, wood, and twine

$395

This original painting was one of the pieces from a recent show I put together titled "Sacred Animal", featuring endangered species. He was a challenge for me, in a lot of ways. Although I love painting animals and they continue to be a recurring subject for me, trying to capture the emotion of this great ape was tricky -- throughout the process, I constantly wavered between feeling that I was making him "too animal" or "too human". In keeping with the theme of environmentalism, I also gave myself the additional challenge of only using substrates I had on-hand for the paintings in the show. I only had a handful of wooden panels and canvases so I turned to the one substrate I had an excess of -- fabric. Obviously there's a big difference between painting on paper or panel and painting on fabric, and at first I hated it! But slowly, with practice, I began to enjoy the way the fabric soaked up paint and water and forced me to abandon finer details for larger swaths of color. Making these fabric paintings into wall-hangings was a new experiment as well! I gathered branches from fallen tree limbs in my neighborhood, sanded and dried them, then protected them with an acrylic sealant. The purpose of the show was also to draw attention to animal conservation efforts, so this series will always hold a place in my heart with its cause-driven focus.

Studio Tour with Miss Sol Creations

Heartmade favorite Sol Pitarque, owner of Miss Sol Creations, is taking us on a studio tour for today’s blog post! Let’s see where she designs and creates her gorgeous flower crowns, headbands, and hair clips! (Tracy might be wearing hers to the market…)

The pictures show some of my favorite corners around my studio.

1. My favorite spot are the shelves with lots of yards of felt (and crazy little left over that always save the day) it’s really hard to keep this corner Instagram ready because i love playing with the different colors combinations, so every fabric is always moving around!

2. I Love plants but I can’t really keep them alive. I’m lucky to say this succulents are over a year and still growing happy.

3. Flowers and more flowers. This is how my table look before arranging the flowers to a crown

4. My place is filled by small recicled bins with tons of hand cut flowers. I love that they look like candies.

5.  A cute souvenir my dad brought from some fun trip and a small wreath I made, just for fun.

You won’t be able to miss the bright colors and beautiful flowers at Miss Sol Creations’ booth so be sure and stop by on November 3rd!

My Favorite Piece with Meechi Ceramics

We’ve added a new category to our blogs for this market called “My Favorite Piece” where Heartmade artists could share a special work that they will also be selling at the show! Today’s post comes from new Heartmade artist Michelle Hernandez of Meechi Ceramics in San Antonio. We are thrilled that she has joined our market family and we know you’ll enjoy meeting her and seeing her gorgeous ceramics in person on November 3rd!

My current favorite piece is my "bitty bowl." I especially love making these little cuties because they are small and fairly fast to make on the potter's wheel which allows me to really get into my "flow" state where I can fully be in the moment of making and not distracted by my mind chatter. They are also great to have around because you can use them for so many things! I like to keep one on my night stand for my jewelry, in the kitchen for my spice mixes and at my desk for paper clips! And that's just the beginning of their endless uses.

Artist Update!

Hey Houston! If you’re around our fair metropolis this weekend you need to hit up the fabulous Bayou City Art Festival and visit Heartmade OG Kristen Kramlich, owner and creator at fLuxe Jewelry! Her new work made Tracy drool and short out her computer, so you KNOW it’s hot — in fact we have a little “making of” video and a shot of the finished product courtesy of Kristen herself. Enjoy and go celebrate art and makers this weekend! We are so proud of all of them!

Studio Tours: Lisa Morales Mixed Media

We’re so excited to welcome new Heartmade artist Lisa Morales to our Heartmade Harvest show this year on November 3rd! She has chosen to take us on a tour of her studio to see how her beautiful collages come to life — and you will be able to buy your own Lisa Morales piece when you visit her at the show!

I am very fortunate to have my studio in my home.  My 8-foot work table was custom built just for my height.  It has an open space on one side where I store my unwrapped canvas prints and the other side has shelving for my bins of paper that I use to create my collage artwork. I paint and texture all my own papers and then separate them by color family.  I love being able to pull them out and dig through my stash.  My “Studio Assistant” loves to lay around in the papers as well.

Three Questions With: Brent Kramlich

Rounding out our video interviews for this market is the talented Brent Kramlich! His organic-form sculptures are fascinating and his wire sculptures are something we've never seen before, which is very exciting! When we look at his work, we feel very Tom Haverford. "A piece of art caused me to have an emotional reaction...is that normal?" 😄

We're thrilled to have Brent participating in Heartmade and we know you'll love meeting him tomorrow on April 7th at Main and McKinney from 11-6!

We interviewed our creatives and asked them three questions to learn more about them, their background and their process. Check out the series for more interviews with our Heartmade makers and artists!

The Nature Of: MC Shave Gear

MC Shave Gear is the fantastic team of Monica and Brady Orand. They consistently blow us away with their line of soaps and oils for men as well as gorgeous handcrafted razors, pens, cuttings boards, and MORE. You will not want to miss visiting their booth this Saturday the 7th to shop for yourself or the man in your life. He'll look and smell amazing! Brady answered our questionnaire and we will look for him soon to be a fish named Pickles. Don't ask, just read. ;)

The Nature Of: tweet & peep jewelry

We're so happy to introduce today's The Nature Of! It's Houston's Neeli Sharrett of tweet & peep jewelry, and we can't wait to see how she blows it out at her first Heartmade market!

(Full disclosure: we also love the artist that she loves and so we played his music while we edited this post!)

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Finding the right balance of success, hard work, fun, and family time.

Which living person do you most admire?

Probably my husband, Dub. He gets up at the butt crack of dawn 6-7 days of the week for work. He busts his butt to make a living for our family. He is a softball and T-Ball coach. He is passionate about his beliefs and is very reasonable in his thinking. He is my best friend! I don't know what I would do without him.

Also I admire my daughter Tyler. She is so strong headed for a 9 year old. She is tough yet so sweet. She loves competition but always loves being girlie and crafty.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Bags! I have always loved purses, jewelry, and all accessories. I still love accessories to this day and love finding unique, handmade grey leather bags.

What is your current state of mind?

Grateful! I'm so thankful for my family (hubby and 2 healthy, amazing kiddos), friends, our home, our community, and my small business supporters.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

Patience. As a wife, mom, working woman, daughter, sister, daughter-in-law, and small business owner, it's hard to keep it all together. I try my best to be patient with my family, friends, and business, but it's so HARD to juggle it all while keeping a smile on my face. I try my best though!

What do you most dislike about your appearance?

My upper arms. I wish they were more toned but I'm working on it.

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Hmmm...not sure!

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

"Are you serious?" or "Seriously!" Maybe I doubt myself and ask people for confirmation a lot.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

My hubby Dub is the greatest love of my life! We have been together since high school. Together over 20 years and married for over 13 years. Still going strong!!

When and where were you happiest?

With my family and friends. And meeting new people at markets/shows around town.

Which talent would you most like to have?

I wish I could sew. I'm pretty mechanical and can figure things out on my way, but I wish I could sew. Maybe then I could make my own bags!

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?

I wish I would have been better at saving money at an early age. But my husband has taught me how to do it now.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a Biology degree. I have always been excited about science and wanted a career in science. Going into college, I thought I would go into Optometry but ended up graduated when my future unknown. I ended up in the Clinical Research Industry and absolutely love it. Now working in this field for over 14 years, I love that our work helps to get new and better medications on the market to help people who are in need.

If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing what would it be?

My grandfather Shu-Shu. HIs life ended too short. I wish I could have spent more time with him.

Where would you most like to live?

Houston is great! But I'd love to live in California or Austin.

What is your most treasured possession?

Our home. My husband and I bought our first home in 2003. We bought our next home in 2015 and spent over 3 months remodeled. We moved in with the kids the week of Christmas 2015. We then flooded in April 2016 and were out of our new home for 3 months. We were forced to repair and remodel again. The flood made our family stronger! We love our home and entertaining for family and friends! This is our forever home!

What is your most marked characteristic?

I would say that I'm caring! Even when I was young, my family would say that I was the "grandma" in the family. I was always worried about others (how they felt, how they would react, and how they would be impacted by things). I still worry about things but it's just a different worry/care now as an adult.

What do you most value in your friends?

Honesty. I love getting my friends' opinions on new styles of jewelry. A shout-out to my friend Jennie who comes to help with me with my shows. I love getting her idea on new creations, new jewelry displays, and always love hanging out with her at my events. Thank you, Jennie!

Tupac for sure! I loved Tupac as a poet and musician. Anytime I hear Tupac's music, it puts me in a groove. I love listening to his music when I work, workout, and/or just to hang.

Which local artists or makers most inspire you?

Ellie from ellion and Natasha from Burdlife. They are always so nice to me and my daughter at shows. And they are at so many shows too! They inspire me to do more with my small business. I actually started making candles before I started making jewelry, so I can appreciate the candle making process. You go Ellie! And even though I make jewelry myself, I love seeing and buying jewelry from other artists plus Natasha is so sweet. Makers support makers too!!

Which historical figure do you most identify with?

Does Joanna Gaines count? She's pretty famous! I love her style, her ideas, and her connection with the community (and nation I guess). She seems to do it all while still having fun and keeping her family together.

Who are your heroes in real life?

My mom. As a single mom, she raised me and my sister and taught us to be independent, self-respected women. As a young child, I know my mom was a hard-working lady and would do anything for her children. She always put us first and never settled for anything but the best for her girls.

What are your favorite names?

I always loved the name Tyler for a girl. There was a character named Tyler in the movie Point Break, and I've always remembered that. When my husband and I started talking about names when I was pregnant, I mentioned the name Tyler and he immediately agreed. There was no turning back. My husband goes by the name 'Dub' which is also a fav of mine. His given name is William Charles Sharrett IV but has always gone by Dub. With both of us having unique names, it was great that we both agreed on the name Tyler for our daughter so quickly.

What is your motto?

Be bold, Be unique, Be beautiful, Be you

From Vanity Fair: "The Proust Questionnaire has its origins in a parlor game popularized (though not devised) by Marcel Proust, the French essayist and novelist, who believed that, in answering these questions, an individual reveals his or her true nature." The Nature Of: Roux St. James

Today's The Nature Of features a brand new Heartmade maker who we are honored to have visiting us from Austin: Krista Lacey of Roux St. James. With her "intention-based botanical compounds" she's going to leave us all smelling fantastic and feeling even better!

Which living person do you most admire?

Currently I would have to say Deepak Chopra. I recently saw an interview with him and I love his constant sense of calm. He is so in tune with himself and the world.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

Righteousness and Justice. In the current state of the world I see so much anger and hatred and it saddens me. I like to believe that people inherently are kind and loving creatures. Things happen in our lives that are cruel, angry, unfair, but that is what teaches us lessons. We need to learn forgiveness, acceptance and how to love again. Traveling down a path of righteousness, or searching for justice, separates us from each other and keeps us from learning acceptance and understanding.

Sorry...this got a little deep!

What do you most dislike about your appearance?

Well...I have struggled since my teenage years with this. I currently have to keep myself in check. These days I have to remind myself that this is the body I was given and I need to learn to love an accept what I have. I live in this body and I it is the right body for this time and place. I also don't really believe in plastic surgery...and have better things to do than work out all the time. So I am kind of stuck with what I have!! Ha ha ha (Preach, sister! -- Tracy)

What is the quality you most like in a man?

Honesty. I like a man that knows how to be honest with himself as well as others. A sense of humor and intellect also help!

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Confidence...but not vanity. A confident women knows herself, accepts herself and rules her world. She can handle problems, roll with the punches...and the guys.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

Oh..there are lots of them. Like "don't touch that" or "what do you say?" I have a 3 year old so there is a lot of repetition of phrases. It is sometimes mind-numbing, so I have to find ways to switch it up but get the same point across. Sometimes I turn it into a game. ha ha

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

Obviously I have to say my husband and my son. They are my world.

However, ART and creativity are truly my greatest loves. I cannot imagine my life without creating something. It is a passion that drives everything I do. So much so, I have a hard time being idle or doing things that do not stimulate that creative spark. I find inspiration wherever I go and in just about everything I do. My mind is constantly reeling...even when I sleep.

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?

I wish there were two of me! I know, that sounds crazy. There are so many things that I want to do in this world and if I could split myself in two I could maybe do it all, as long as the experience is shared between us!

If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing what would it be?

Maybe a cat. They seem to have the life. Sleep all day, get rub downs, climb trees, chase stuff....and they get nine lives!

What is your most marked characteristic?

I am sincere. I try my best to put my heart into everything whether it is related to my business, a conversation, or a person. I try to be as genuine as possible at all times because I feel that people deserve it. It is really all part of my philosophy of sharing love and kindness, being mindful of others and elevating the human experience.

Who are your favorite artists?

I got my undergraduate degree in studio art, so there is a long list of artist. But, I have to say my all time favorite would be Marcel Duchamp. I have a thing for old object, collage, and mixed media work. But I also love when art can make a statement, but also be visually interesting. I feel like he was able to do both.

Which local artists or makers most inspire you?

I can't really pick one. I am inspired by all of my fellow makers and locals. I know how tough being a small maker can be, the ins and outs of show schedules, managing inventory, filling orders, having time to create...then balancing all that with a personal or family life. We are all a veritable hat stand. I also found that the majority of the makers I meet are women, which is even more inspiring.

What is your motto?

Be yourself. Wear what you like (in regards to perfume, but it applies to many things). Be kind.

How I Work My Space: All Sewn Up Customs

The first time we saw All Sewn Up Customs' wee BB-8 terrarium necklace we SQUEALED! Designer Amanda LaMartina's work is fun and creative and happy and JUST what we need for Heartmade! She was kind enough to send us some awesome workspace photos so that we can watch the tiny magic happen -- check it out and buy your own pop culture goodies on April 7!

"Here's where the magic happens! Current project on the table are hand casted mini characters. I'm filing down any rough edges and prepping them for paint. I make these mini characters for my one of a kind, terrarium necklaces.

A few things I love about my studio are, it's in my home (can't beat a 10 second commute), there's lots of natural lighting, and I have a place for all my tools and supplies for projects from sewing to torch soldering."

Wonder what BB-8 thinks...?

The Nature Of: Wild House

Today we're learning all about Katherine Dexter of Wild House. We're already in love with her all-natural body care and we're very happy to have her coming to Houston from College Station!

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Living on a self-sustaining homestead with like 10 kids that I homeschool and we grow our own food. Lots of trees, lots of dogs, and nothing to worry about.

Which living person do you most admire?

Probably my father. He's a self made man. His parents were really humble, they raised 6 children and never had much to go around but that taught him valuable lessons about how to work and save. While I was growing up he worked and traveled a lot but my mother was able to stay home with us, which was invaluable. My father went from an entry level graphic designer to a joint owner of the same company over 25 years. When his partners went in a new direction my father sold his shares and basically started over in a new state, with no guarantees. His new company is more profitable than ever and it's because He's a dedicated worker, has incredible business sense, and above all, because he has made God a priority over every other thing in his life.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Every once in a while (long while) I like to splurge on a pair of shoes from Shoes of Prey where you can design your own shoe, right down to the materials it's made from. I own 3 pairs of their shoes and they're still my favorite shoes.

What is your current state of mind?

I'm tired, so tired, all the time. But I'm also excited. I'm doing lots of things and I enjoy being self-employed so much, it's very fulfilling.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

Softness, or being meek I guess. I view it as not being able to stand up for yourself and it's really annoying.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?

I had a baby a year ago and I never lost the weight. I found out I carry a lot of weight on my tummy, and I HATE it! Why couldn't I carry it in my boobs or my butt??

What is the quality you most like in a man?

Honesty.

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Also honesty. Everyone should just be honest.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

All the swear words.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

My son, I'm probably supposed to say my husband, but it's my son. My pregnancy felt so surreal but the second that little boy cried and I heard him for the first time it's like my heart just exploded and I never knew you could love someone so much.

When and where were you happiest?

Anytime I can make my son laugh. It's like the sound angels must make when they're singing or something.

Which talent would you most like to have?

I would like to be a good decorator. I think I'm really good at it, or I like to pretend I am, but secretly I have no idea how to put a room together.

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?

I had a mohawk for a while, and then I got bored with it so I wanted to grow it out, and the only way you grow out a mohawk is by shaving your head and growing it all out fresh. So I did that, and I just wish I could have long hair immediately.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

My business. I've never built anything this valuable or this far reaching before.

If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing what would it be?

A Killer Whale!! I love those things. They're the number one predator in the whole ocean. They fight sharks. They don't care about baby seals, they'll beach themselves to eat one. They're stone cold. They're fierce. They are my spirit animal.

Where would you most like to live?

On a homestead in the middle of Texas, before you get to the desert, where it's still green and I can own a lot of guns.

What is your most treasured possession?

My family. (awwww)

What is your most marked characteristic?

I'm pretty confident.

What do you most value in your friends?

A sense of humor that clicks with mine.

Who are your favorite artists?

I really like Minjae Lee, He's a South Korean mixed media artist who does incredible, detailed portraits. I'm also a huge fan of Lady Gaga, especially now. I think she's crazy and actually pretty authentic and I love her voice.

Which local artists or makers most inspire you?

I have a great friend who runs Brazos Valley Soaps. She's a perfect example of how to be kind and uplifting to other people. She's incredibly helpful, especially to people within our industry and that's really admirable to me because I've met a lot of people who chose to be rude or unhelpful to up-comers because they're insecure and don't want the competition. She's the opposite, and is ready and willing with advice.

Which historical figure do you most identify with?

Ayn Rand. She was far from perfect, but at the core of her philosophy she just wanted people to be the most honest version of themselves, and wanted people to be as free as possible. She valued independence and liberty, and while there were a lot of things she said and did that I disagree with, her philosophy has really resonated with me and been really influential in my political and personal views.

Who are your heroes in real life?

Anyone who shows up with an ice cold fountain Dr. Pepper.

What are your favorite names?

I'm in love with Scandinavian names, I'm naming all of my children names from that area.

What is your motto?

Live Your Dream.
But not in a cute "live laugh love" kind of way. In a "you're an independent person so just do what you want" kind of way.

From Vanity Fair: "The Proust Questionnaire has its origins in a parlor game popularized (though not devised) by Marcel Proust, the French essayist and novelist, who believed that, in answering these questions, an individual reveals his or her true nature." How I Work My Space: Rust & Pearls

Today we take a look behind the scenes at Debbie Sakach's workspace, where she creates the beautiful jewelry for Rust & Pearls. Debbie is an original Heartmade artist and we are very excited to welcome her back all the way from Austin! Come buy some of her sparklies on April 7th!

"Here are some super honest everyday pics of my studio space. As an artist this is my first ever true work space of my own and I’m super grateful for it. I used to make every single piece of jewelry in my lap on the couch. Getting a table was actually life changing! The things I love most in the studio are the picture of my grandmother and artwork by fellow artists who inspire me on a daily basis."

We asked our artists and makers to send us photos of their workspace so that you could see how the magic is made. Check out the series for more behind the scenes shots of these talented people and their creative spaces.

The Nature Of: Wednesday Thursday

Today's questionnaire is answered by awesome new Heartmade artist Suzie Brisendine of Wednesday Thursday. We're so excited about her gorgeous work that mixes graphic design with string art and we know you will be too when you meet her on April 7th!

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Hmm. Perfect Happiness. Alone in my car listening to NPR? Does that out me as a boring person?? It's just that...I rarely get alone time when I'm not tempted to do other things -- like do the dishes, start some laundry, feed the cat, etc -- and NPR is one way I feel stay connected to the rest of the world. It's my main news source, it's how I hear about 90% of the books I read (the other 10% comes from Reese Witherspoon's Book of the Month Club #shoutout) and it's how I am introduced to many new and profound ideas and/or world views. So, yeah...I feel enlightened and at peace when I'm driving around - alone - listening to NPR.

Which living person do you most admire?

My sisters. They have each had unique hurdles in their lives, but are now truly the best women and mothers. They are not very much alike...but are both my go-to for advice and support. It helps that we have a lifetime of history to help us understand each other and feel safe to express certain worries and struggles, but I really enjoy my friendships with each of them.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Online shopping. Though, if I'm honest, most of the time I fill up my cart and close the browser. So, in reality, that is probably not an extravagance at all.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

Heroism. If that's a virtue..? Most people don't really need a "hero" - they are the only ones who can truly save themselves.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?

Oh man. My hair. BUT, I am learning to cope with and appreciate it. It is SO curly and SO short right now, there's not much I can do except let it be. I'm in the process of growing it out, but...anyone who's done that before knows what a torturous process it can be.

What is the quality you most like in a man?

Loyalty. I mean, I like a lot of qualities - it's always hard for me to pick ONE thing in situations like this - but...I do deeply appreciate true faithfulness and loyalty, which I have found to be more rare than I expected.

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Again, loyalty.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

Not to be predictable, but..my husband, Sam.

I have loved him in one way or another since I was 14 years old. He's always been my "safe place" to talk through all kinds of emotions with and work through hardships from college until just last night. We have discovered so much MORE about one another in marriage - as one does - but he's never stopped being the one I want to talk to; the one whose opinion on any subject I value most. Plus he's pretty good looking.

Which talent would you most like to have?

Singing! Oh man, how I have always longed to sing like Idina Menzel. Or, as some may know her -- Adele Dazeem.

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?

I would sleep more. A lot more.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

When I finished a 30 day yoga challenge after not working out consistently for 31 years (aka my entire life).

If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing what would it be?

Oh my, I think I need this life to be it! I don't know if I could start over and do it all again.

Where would you most like to live?

Near the beach. And maybe somewhere not in the US. Not because I don't like the US, I've just always thought it would be fun to live abroad, if even for a season of life. Australia or Mexico...somewhere I imagine life to be simpler and more like a constant vacation.

What is your most treasured possession?

My coffee maker.

What do you most value in your friends?

My closest friends are the "whole package" so to speak. We laugh endlessly, but we also share our deep dark secrets and enjoy a variety of experiences together and cry together and argue (respectfully) with one another.

I don't know about you, but a large chunk of my friends fall into one or two of those categories - we laugh a lot and we share a variety of experiences, but we don't usually go near the hard stuff in life. Or, we can have really deep conversations and connect on that level, but maybe our senses of humor are not quite in the same ballpark.

Which - of course I value ALL those different types of friendships, but when I meet those few people that fall into ALL categories it is magical.

Which local artists or makers most inspire you?

Rebekah Vinyard Jewelry. She's in Austin so she's quasi local, but i think she still fits the bill. She has some jewelry in Houston shops and does Houston markets, so surely that counts for something. I met her back in college, of course neither of us knowing we would later run into one another at markets and shops. But her stuff is gorgeous. And she's been at this small business thing for a long time. She's so great.

Newton Supply Co. They're also in Austin, but have bags in at least one Houston shop. Laura has always made beautiful products and been consistent about giving back to the community. Her work with refugee women, in particular, is really inspirational. She has a good heart and I love everything she does!

Box Sparrow Studio. I don't know Abbie personally, but I love love LOVE her ceramics. I took a ceramics class in college and had so much fun with it. Now I am always drawn to that type of work, knowing what challenge and precision goes into it. Box Sparrow creates incredible clean lines in her beautifully modern pieces...oh, I can't get enough.

What are your favorite names?

Lucy and Lola - my daughters :) I always kind of wondered if parents get tired of the names they picked...i mean a LIFETIME of the same name may get kind of boring, right? But no! Those two names, I fall more in love with every day. They fit each of the girls so perfectly.
